Kwasniewski becomes honorary citizen of Warsaw

15.07.2010

Former President Aleksander Kwasniewski has been awarded the title of honorary citizen of Warsaw.

As many as 32 city councillors from the Democratic Left Alliance, Kwasniewski’s party, and the ruling Civic Platform supported the motion while all the opposition Law and Justice councillors rejected it.

“Everyone individually assessed the former president’s work and voted in accordance with their conscience,” said the Law and Justice councillor Marek Makuch.

The motion to award Kwasniewski with the honorary citizenship of Warsaw was put forward by the Democratic Left Alliance councillors, who wrote that: “during two terms of office (1995-2005) he contributed to creating and strengthening democratic institutions and building civil society and national reconciliation.”

Among honorary citizens of Warsaw are former Polish presidents Lech Walesa and Lech Kaczynski as well as Pope John Paul II, scientist Maria Sklodowska-Curie, Marshall Jozef Pilsudski, pianist and PM Ignacy Jan Paderewski, social worker Irena Sendlerowa, historian Norman Davies and the 14th Dalai Lama.
