16.07.2010

For the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, the Ministry of Culture commissioned a 3-D animated reconstruction based of the Jan Matejko painting of the historical event.

The project, created by Oscar-nominated animator Tomasz Baginski and realized by Platige Image, the animator’s firm, will premiere today in the National Museum in Warsaw.

Sixty-seven unique characters from the painting have been animated in 3-D and visitors are invited to stand inside the image and ‘touch’ the knights involved in battle.

The 3-D imagery was created to commemorate both the 600-year-old battle, but also the Matejko painting which, at 42 square metres, is the largest piece of art the museum holds in its collection.

Baginski, nominated for an Academy Award in 2002 for his short animated film The Cathedral, was also commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to create an animated spot to commemorate the battle. Entitled Grundwald: The 600th Anniversary of the Battle, the clip is 90-seconds long the soundtrack was specially recorded by the punk rock band Armia. (mmj)
