Snakes abound in Poland

20.07.2010

Continuing hot and dry weather in Poland has brought out poisonous snakes throughout the country. Reports speak of dozens of people admitted to hospital with snakebite.

The European viper (or adder) is the only species of poisonous snake in Poland, and can be found sunning itself in a variety of places, as its habitat ranges from forests and wetlands to high grass, urban areas included.

The snake, recognisable by a zig-zag pattern on its back, is shy and generally attacks only when disturbed. Its bite is not lethal, though it can be dangerous to children and elderly, or when sustained near the heart; but does require medical treatment and the injection of anti-venom.

Vipers are a protected species in Poland – and so are slow worms which are often mistaken for the snake. (ek/jb)
