President-Elect Bronislaw Komorowski will be sworn in as head of state in August, and not earlier in July, as previously reported.
The Supreme Court announced, Wednesday that it will give its formal decision governing the result of the July 4 presidential elections at 10.00 CET on Tuesday, August 3.
A formal decision on the result of any elections in Poland has to be confirmed by the Supreme Court 30 days after the primary ballot results.
Following a positive decision on the vote, the National Assembly (comprised of both parliamentary houses) has 7 days to ratify the result and swear in the new head of state.
If the Supreme Court were to find any discrepancies which would render the ballot invalid, a further election would have to be held within two-and-a-half months.
Premature decision?
Earlier, some members of Parliament stated that the swearing-in of Bronislaw Komorowski would happen on July 29.
Parliamentary Speaker Grzegorz Schetyna also announced that if the Supreme Court were to finalise its decision this week, then the swearing-in ceremony would take place most probably on August 6, before parliament starts is summer recess. (jb)
