Loud masses give parishioners a headache

22.07.2010

Residents of the western town of Miejska Gorka complain that they are forced to listen to all Catholic masses and funeral services as they are being loudly broadcast through the church’s speakers.

Inhabitants of Miejska Gorka do not need alarm clocks as they are woken up every day by the rumbling sound of church bells followed by a live broadcast from a morning mass.

“We are woken up at 7 am, then we are forced to listen to a mass, then to a funeral service, then to another mass and so on. It’s been like that every day for 9 years,” complains Grzegorz Duda who lives next to the church. “I don’t need a watch as, every hour, a different church melody is played,” adds another parishioner.

Grzegorz Duda, fed up with the constant noise from the church, asked the local curate to discipline the church rector and, if it does not help, he will file a law suit against the priest. Duda has already gathered enough evidence against the rector – he regularly records everything that comes out of the church speakers with his mobile phone. A professional recorder is not necessary as the masses are suitably loud.

The town is divided between adherents and opponents of loud church services. “What’s the point of listening to funeral services twice a day,” says one of the parishioners. But others are happy that they can listen to the mass without leaving home.

Residents of Miejska Gorka have already filed a complaint at the mayor. “I tired to persuade him to turn down the speakers but he refused,” says Karol Skrzypczak. The priest has refused to comment on the accusations. (mg/mmj)
