Smolensk cross to be moved on August 3

23.07.2010

The cross erected outside the Presidential Palace after the 10 April plane crash is to be moved to the Academic Church of St Anne on August 3.

The announcement was made by the spokesman for the Warsaw Church Diocese. The cross will be carried by students in an annual pilgrimage to the Black Madonna shrine of Czestochowa, which leaves Warsaw two days later. After the pilgrimage, in the middle of August, the cross is to return to St Anne’s Church, where it will be placed in a chapel, close to the memorial to the victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre.

The cross was put up outside the Presidential Palace by a group of scouts as a temporary tribute to the victims of the plane crash which killed President Lech Kaczynski and ninety five other people. President-elect Komorowski’s proposal to remove the cross to a more appropriate place, for security reasons, has led to his political opponent Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s to remark that removing the cross would be a moral abuse until a proper memorial is erected on the site.

A group of Kaczynski loyalists have kept an around-the-clock vigil to prevent the cross from being moved from its present location.

Latest reports say that the city’s conservator of historical monuments has ruled out the possibility of erecting any memorial in front of the Presidential Palace, which stands on the historic Royal Route. (mk/mmj)
