Chopin Museum, Warsaw

The number of museums opening - and the amount of people visiting museums in Poland - has risen significantly in recent years, shows data from the central statistical office (GUS).

At the end of 2009, there were 774 museums open to the public - 31 more than 12 months previously.

Over 21 million people visited museums last year, or about two and a half percent more than in 2008.

The most popular collections were connected with artistic or historical themes, but natural history and technical museums also drew in the punters. (pg)
