Though 60 percent of Polish women are not pleased with their weight, according to a recent poll, one-in-four take no exercise at all. But the rise of the fitness club could change all that.
John Beauchamp reports.
It's not just women who have a problem with their body image. Social psychologist Jacek Santorski believes that both women and men do not follow the old maxim, mens sane in corpore sano, a healthy mind in a healthy body. The problem is women want to look good, but refrain from taking any exercise.
“We have got used to the fact that women can regulate their fertility by taking a pill, yet there are some things that can’t be done so simply,” Santorski says.
Those women that do exercise, however, often find themselves going to the gym, taking part in such exercises as body art, a form of power yoga, and spinning.
Pawel Flasza from the Mlyn Fitness Club in Poland's southern city of Krakow told thenews.pl that many health problems are caused by a bad diet.
“As we all know, the reason we are overweight is not necessarily a lack of exercise, but rather the way we eat,” Flasza admits.
Polish women are also taken in by advertising, and spend money on ‘wonder pills’ and devices to make themselves look beautiful, rather than taking any exercise, muses social psychologist Jacek Santorski, who adds that “magic may be beautiful, but fantasising about one’s health can be dangerous.”
New research released by pollsters GFK also show that the most important factors in life for Polish women are family and having a successful career.
