Katarzyna Sobczyk, a popular singer who had hits in the 1960s in Poland, died in Warsaw on Wednesday aged 65.

Katarzyna, born Kazimiera Sawicka in February 1945, had returned to Poland two years ago from Chicago where she had lived since 1979.

She was particularly known for her hits with the group Czerwono-Czarni but continued recording till the mid-1980s.

She died in an oncological hospice in Warsaw after a long illness. (pg)
