The central city of Plock is preparing itself for a flood wave after torrential rains over the weekend, though the situation in the south of Poland is improving.

After torrential rains the level of the Vistula River near Plock has exceeded emergency levels by two centimeters. In five counties along the river precautionary alerts have been announced. The main flood wave is expected in Plock Monday evening but, according to meteorologists, it will be smaller than the flooding which hit the area in May and June.

Meanwhile, in the south eastern region of Lublin the water is subsiding. In Annopol, where it exceeded emergency levels by half a metre on Saturday, it has gone down by 15 centimetres and in Pulawy by 22 centimetres.

Flood alerts will probably be called off in the southern region of Podkarpacie as the water levels in all major rivers there do not exceed emergency levels anymore.  Firemen are monitoring embankments on the Vistula River, however.

Meteorologists warn of strong wind, thunderstorms and torrential rains which are likely to pass through central and eastern Poland today. (mg)
