A weekend full of cultural and sports events, such as the Warsaw Rising anniversary, Tour de Pologne and Woodstock Festival increased the death toll on Poland’s roads, say police.
Police statistics show that on Saturday and Sunday 21 people died and 285 were injured in car accidents.
As many as 1,118 drunk drivers were detained. A 31-year-old driver had 3 per mills of alcohol in his blood. On Saturday, near the eastern city of Lublin, a 29-year-old motorcyclist crashed into a passenger car while trying to overtake several vehicles at once. The man died. On Sunday, near the southern city of Checiny, a 35-year-old driver ran down two pedestrians. One of them died on the spot, another one in hospital. Also on Sunday, in the western city of Poznan, a tram ran down a pedestrian.
On 1 August, a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of car accidents in which children become victims took off. It is a joint initiative of the Polish Police Headquarters, Health Ministry and Nickelodeon TV channel for children. “We want to teach children how to be safe on road. The face of the campaign is a cartoon character Songe Bob,” said Mariusz Sokolowski from the Polish Police Headquarters.
Drowning by numbers
Polish lakes and rivers also saw their share of death As many as 18 people drowned in the country at the weekend.
“It is a better result, however, than in the previous weekends, when 30 people drowned on Sunday only,” says Grazyna Puchalska from the Polish Police Headquarters.
On Saturday night, in the mountain town of Zakopane, a 22-year-old man drowned and his 21-year-old friend who tried to rescue him is in a serious state in hospital (mg/pg)
