A group of Facebook users have threatened to take matters into their hands tonight and move the cross outside the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.

The cross was scheduled to be moved to the nearby St Anne’s church last Wednesday. But after noisy protests by the self styled “Defenders of the Cross” authorities backed down until a compromise could be found.

Now a group of opponents of the cross – placed by scouts outside the President’s residence after the death of Lech and Maria Kaczynski in the air crash in western Russia on April 10 – say they will protest from 23.00 CET, Monday night, to have the cross removed, as originally planned.

“We’re going to urge city and church authorities to remove the cross as soon as possible,” the initiator of the Action Cross Facebook page told the Metro newspaper. “If not, we will take the cross ourselves to a police station as evidence of an offence,”  he warns, arguing that the cross was placed outside the Presidential Palace illegally, without heritage trust's consent.
