Fire damages Majdanek barracks

10.08.2010

A wooden barracks containing thousands of pairs of inmates shoes at the former Nazi death camp at Majdanek was seriously damaged by fire last night.

The fire broke out around midnight and took around six hours to extinguish.

The situation was under control, Tuesday morning, but some of the losses are irreplaceable, including a collection of prisoners shoes.

“Approximately two thirds of the wooden barracks is damaged. Including seven thousand pairs of shoes of former prisoners,” spokesman from the provincial fire brigade command in Lublin, Wojciech Miciuła told TVP.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. (pg)
