A majority of Poles think that the Smolensk cross should remain outside the Presidential Palace until a permanent monument to those who died in the April 10 air disaster is erected there, says a new survey.
Fifty seven percent of Poles believe that the cross should remain at the site until a compromise monument can be agreed upon, says the survey by Gfk Polonia.
Twenty-two of respondents say the cross should be removed without anything replacing it.
Asked about who was to blame for escalation the conflict, 29 percent said the fault lay with the opposition Law and Justice party, 18 percent indicated the defenders of the cross protestors and 16 percent put the blame on President Komorowski.
Other respondents thought the media (none percent) and politicians (eight percent) in general were responsible for the growing tension.
The telephone survey was conducted on 18 August from a sample of 1,000 individuals. (pg/ab)
