If parliamentary elections were held in August in Poland, Civic Platform would receive 45 percent of the vote, a lead down to just six percent ahead of Law and Justice, finds a new opinion poll.
The survey by GfK Polonia finds that Civic Platform - the senior partner in the current ruling coalition - has lost four percent in support compared to one month ago while Law and Justice have increased support by to percent and are now on 39 percent, their best showing in opinion polls for some time.
In third place is the Democratic Left Alliance on nine percent.
Support for the junior partner in the ruling coalition, Polish Peasants Party is on three percent - that’s two percent below the threshold to obtain any MPs in parliament.
The poll was taken between 5-9 August from a sample of 994. It was commissioned by the Rzeczpospolita newspaper.
A general election in Poland is not scheduled till next year. As Poland will be taking over the rotating EU presidency in the second half of the year, the election will probably be held in the spring. Nationwide local elections are scheduled for this autumn, however.
Meanwhile, a poll for PBS DGA for the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper shows Civic Platform on 44 percent with Law and Justice on 27 percent. The Democratic Left Alliance was on nine percent.
Both polls were taken during the controversies of the Smolensk cross and VAT hike.
