Malopolska museum collections digitalised

11.08.2010

The most valuable exhibits from across a number of museums in Poland’s southern Malopolska region are to be digitally archived and presented in a dedicated web service.

The undertaking, which costs 2.5 million zloty (626,400 euro), is funded in part by the Malopolska Regional Operational Programme and aims to present over 36,000 works of art from the entire region.

The project, co-ordinated by the National Museum in Krakow, will see the digitalisation of objects from seven cultural institutions at first, including the District Museum in Tarnow, the Slowacki Theatre in Krakow, as well as a number of ethnographic museums in the Malopolska region.

Money from the European Union will be used to buy special equipment for the digitilisation of the exhibits, which are to be scanned, photographed and microfilmed, before being published on the web.

An online catalogue, created in cooperation with the Malopolska Digital Library, hopes to gain 12,000 visits a year when it goes online. (jb)
