MPs break off holiday for emergency session on floods

UPDATED - MPs broke off from their summer recess, Thursday, to amend laws to aid the victims of the recent flooding in Lower Silesia.

 

The special emergency flood act was prepared by the government on Tuesday and will provide a legislative framework for providing jobs and aid to farmers in the region where flood waters killed three people over the weekend.

 

MPs passed an amendment bill to the special emergency flood act, adapting the laws on providing assistance to the flood victims in accordance with EU norms.

  

A total of 312 MPs, taking part in the voting, unanimously gave the bill the green light.

  

The special emergency flood act was prepared by the government on Tuesday and will provide a legislative framework for providing jobs and aid to farmers in the region where flood waters killed three people over the weekend.

 

Due to the main debating chamber in the lower house (Sejm) of parliament undergoing renovation, members will squeeze into the Hall of Columns, usually used by committees.

 

Turnout in today's session was less than during normal business at the house but leaders from all parliamentary parties assure there will be a quorum so votes can take place - meaning over half the of the total numbers of MPs.

 

Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified person was found on Wednesday in a lignite mine near Bogatynia, where two victims died on Saturday.

 

The body is of a woman who was probably crushed by a tree, Antoni Owsiak of the District Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec told Polish Radio. (pg/ab)
