Warsaw prepares to start second metro line dig

17.08.2010

Construction work on the second line of Warsaw’s metro system, travelling west to east, is to begin this week.

The line will stretch from the Ronda Daszyńskiego roundabout, to the west of the city centre, to Wileński train station in the Praga District on the east bank of the River Vistula. The initial phase of preparation will be followed by drilling work carried out in stages from mid-September, which will mean traffic disruptions for Warsaw motorists.

"Traffic diversions may be far-reaching in and around ul Świętokrzyska., rondo ONZ and Wileński station," says spokesperson for the Public Authority of Transport of Warsaw, Igor Krajnow.

The investment will be over 1bln euro. Constructors face a race against time to complete the central section of the line in time for the Euro 2012 football championships in under two years time.

Last week, a group of 21 residents wrote to the Mazovian regional governor protested the proposed second line, concerned as to where displaced soil from the digging process would be situated.

The first north to south section of the metro was first opened in 1995 though only completed to its full length in 2008 (ab/pg)
