One of Jarosalw Kaczynski’s former deputy prime ministers in the Law and Justice-led coalition government (2005-07) wants to strip him of his parliamentary immunity and sue him for slander.

Lawyer Roman Giertych, who was also a controversial education minister in the coalition says that when Kaczynski called him “a liar” in a newspaper interview in February this year, the Law and Justice leader “deprived him of trust, necessary to hold a given post, profession or type of business.”

If Jaroslaw Kaczynski does not waiver his immunity – which he can do under parliament rules - the parliamentary regulation committee will have to take a stance on the matter and the Lower House of the Parliament will have to vote whether to lift it or not.

“In my opinion, it shouldn’t be a problem. The majority in parliament is aware that a person who lies breaks the law,” Giertych, leader of the League of Polish Families, told the Wprost magazine.

The row began in February when Roman Giertych accused Jaroslaw Kaczynski of gathering dirt on political opponents to use against them when he was prime minister. In response, Kaczynski accused Giertych of lying.

The coalition led by Kaczynski broke up in August 2007 after only two years in power following constant bickering between himself and Roman Giertych and the other deputy prime minister at the time, Andrzej Lepper.

Under Poland’s slander and libel laws, if found guilty Jaroslaw Kaczynski could face up to two years in prison. (pg/mg)
