A design of a monument commemorating the Smolensk crash victims, showing dozens of hands pointing to the sky, has been presented by the self-styled Defenders of the Cross.
The “Obelisk to the fidelity to the homeland” – as the designers of the monument have called it - is planned to be 8-metres high, depicting 96 hands – to symbolize the 96 who died in Smolensk on April 10 - emerging from the ground and pointing to the sky.
It has not been revealed yet if, and where, the monument will be erected. Defenders of the Cross want it to stand in front of the Presidential Palace.
“The obelisk symbolizes the nation and all those who died while faithfully serving the motherland. For many it was a pilgrimage, a mission. But all of them were loyal to the homeland and the nation,” says sculptor Maksymilian Buskupski who designed the obelisk on behalf of protestors who have so far blocked the removal of the cross standing outside the Presidential Palace to a church down the road.
“The hands, with two fingers lifted to the sky, are a symbol of loyalty, solidarity and military salute,” adds Biskupski.
Defenders of the Cross, supported by the Law and Justice party and some of the families of the Smolensk victims, want the monument to replace the cross which is located in front of the Presidential Palace.
“It’s the best place to erect a monument commemorating the late President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and the rest of the victims,” the Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said on the Law and Justice web site.
On 12 August, the Chancellery of the President placed a plaque commemorating the Smolensk victims on the Presidential Palace but Defenders of the Cross and the Law and Justice party claim that the plaque is not enough and demand a monument. (mg/pg)
