Physicians at the Children’s’ Health Centre near Warsaw say the six year old boy who had a liver transplant yesterday after eating poisonous mushrooms remains in a critical condition.

Doctor Elżbieta Jezierska has told a news conference that the liver transplant yesterday was little Tomek’s only chance of survival. She said the boy is still in an induced coma and a dialysis machine is still trying to clean his body of toxins.

“The next few days will determine whether the new liver is working properly,” the spokeswoman at the children’s health centre said.

Every year about 700 people in Poland suffer from mushroom poisoning, killing around 50. (pg)
