Poland’s education ministry has announced that some schools will open late this term due to flooding in various regions over the summer.
Minister Katarzyna Hall told Polish Radio One this morning that flooding has hampered preparations for the opening of the school term on September 1.
Flood related damages are estimated at a total of 100 million zlotys, or about 25 million euro. A large part of funds for repairs comes from insurance, while the rest is being supplied from state coffers. The minister confirmed also that as of the new school year, teachers will receive a seven percent pay rise.
Minister Hall admitted that the education ministry is mulling over an idea to let pupils with a fail mark graduate to the next class in special circumstances. She explained that such a move could be justified by the pupil’s difficult family situation or personal problems.
“Rather than raising the mark artificially, the school should justly assess the pupil’s progress and give them an opportunity to correct the fail mark”, the minister said,“ she said.
“This would not be done automatically. We want to give the school and teachers a bigger say,” Minister Hall explained. (kk)
