Poll lead increases for Teflon Tusk

25.08.2010

Despite the recent announcement that the government is to put one percent on VAT, PM Donald Tusk’s ruling Civic Platform party has lengthened its lead over the opposition, finds a new opinion poll.

Forty eight percent told the GfK opinion pollsters that they would vote for Civic Platform in a general election, representing an increased over the opposition Law and Justice from six to 13 percent since the beginning of August.

The recent VAT hike announcement has made little difference with voters, with Civic Platform having enough potential votes to rule alone in a new parliament.

Law and Justice popularity has declined, from 39 to 35 percent.

The recent row over the Smolensk cross - with the Democratic Left Alliance calling for a clearer separation between church and state has done nothing for their support which remains stuck on nine percent.

No other party would gain enough votes to have seats in parliament, with the junior coalition partner on four percent, one percent below the threshold necessary to have MPs elected.

The latest GfK Polonia survey was commissioned by the Rzeczpospolita daily on 19 to 24 August from a sample of 1000 people.

Meanwhile, another poll conducted by TNS OBOP shows differing support ratings than those published in the daily.

According to the poll, if parliamentary elections were to take place in August, Civic Platform would win with 45 percent of the ballot, with opposition Law and Justice gaining 29 percent.

The Democratic Left Alliance would receive 14 percent of the vote, and an increase in support of the junior coalition partner, the Polish Peasants Party, would see them back in parliament with 6 percent of the ballot.

The TNS OBOP poll notes a drop in support of the Civic Platform of 7 percentage points on July, with Law and Justice losing 2 percent of votes. The Democratic Left Alliance and Polish Peasants Party gained 3 and 2 percentage points respectively.

TNS OBOP conducted the survey between 5-8 August on a random selection of adult Poles, numbering 985 respondents. (pg/jb)
