Late summer has officially arrived in Poland as storks begin their southern migration.
Most of the birds inhabiting the south eastern Podkarpacie region in Poland are now migrating to central and southern Africa.
They will cover a distance of up to 10,000 kilometres.
“On their way to Africa, the birds fly over 100 to 400 kilometres every day. Polish storks cross the Bosphorus, they pass through the Middle East and Israel, follow the Nile and finish their trip in the south of Africa, which they reach in November,” ornithologist Marian Stój to Polish Radio.
The European storks living in the east of the River Elbe, on the other hand, travel to Africa via the straits of Gibraltar.
The flocks return to Europe in February. This time, the route takes just six weeks, as the birds are in a hurry to reach their nests as soon as possible, claims Stój. There are over 50,000 couples of storks in Poland. (ab)
