Liver transplant boy conscious, say medical staff

25.08.2010

Six-year-old Tomek, who had a liver transplant over a week ago has finally come to and has even spoken to those around him, say doctors at the children’s health institute in Warsaw.

The boy is also breathing without a ventilator, says Paweł Trzciński, spokesperson at the hospital. He had been put into an induced coma since the surgery which saved his life last Tuesday and doctors started trying to wake him late last Friday.

"We have waited two weeks for this moment. The boy has finally woken up, regained consciousness and is talking to the personnel. We had feared that his brain would be damaged, but we now believe that everything is alright," the spokesman told Polish Radio.

Tomek had to have an emergency liver transplant after eating poisonous mushrooms. The six year old underwent another operation yesterday on his stomach which was badly damaged by the poison. (ab/pg)
