Justice Minister Krzysztof Kwiatkowski wants to introduce a course on law into Polish secondary schools.
“Poles, contrary to other societies have little understanding of legal matters and justice system, which can result in legal exclusion,” said Kwiatkowski.
According to a survey commissioned by Justice Ministry, 80 percent of Poles do not know that there are courts of first and second resort and 30 percent do not know what a “lawsuit” means.
On 1 September, 10,000 Polish secondary school students will start a pilot course on law. If the course brings good results, Justice Ministry will call for including it into curriculum. “It is the state’s duty to prepare citizens for a contact with representatives of the judiciary. Poles usually ask for legal aid when it’s too late because they lack legal knowledge,” said Kwiatkowski.
Justice Ministry will spend 600,000 zloty (151,000 euro) on the pilot course. (mg)
