President Bronislaw Komorowski told delegates at a special Solidarity trade union congress in Gdynia, Monday afternoon, in celebration of the 1980 August Agreements, that Poland must continue to build on the amazing achievements of 30 years ago.
“Solidarity in Poland is possible but we can only build it together,” President Komorowski said.
\Around 2,500 guests assembled for the congress, which included Prime Minister Donald Tusk and leader of the Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who received thunderous applause when he was introduced.
One notable absence was the man who led the Solidarity trade union in the 1980s, Lech Walesa, who said on his blog over the weekend that he was tired and his “health was not good”. Many believe that it was his disagreements with the present day Solidarity leadership that was responsible for him not being at the congress.
Later the congress will close with a musical extravaganza, with songs from Renata Przemyk Robert Gawliński and Kayah among others.
Tomorrow the celebrations move down the road to the Gdansk shipyard, to mark the signing of the August Agreements which legalised the Solidarity trade union, 30 years ago. (pg)
