Hundreds die of drowning over summer

31.08.2010

As many as 380 people have drowned in Polish rivers, lakes and the sea over the summer season.

“It’s been the most tragic season in years,” says Mariusz Sokolowski, spokesman for the Police Headquarters. The most common cause of drowning was alcohol and recklessness, he says. “Many people tried to prove that they were champion swimmers but failed.”

As many as 260 people drowned in July when temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius.

“People looked for relief from the heat in water but many chose unguarded beaches,” says Sokolowski.

In 2009, 468 people drowned in Poland: this year already 586 people lost their lives while swimming in dangerous waters. (mg)
