Floods cost Poland 3 billion euro

08.09.2010

Floods that hit Poland this spring and summer have caused losses estimated by the Interior Ministry at about 12 billion zlotys, or about 3 billion euro.

Budget reserves allocated for removing the damage amount to 2.7 billion zlotys.

Poland is also likely to get about 100 million euro in aid from the EU. This means that some 9 billion zlotys, or close on 2.3 billion euro,  needed to tackle the problem is lacking, reports Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.

Some funds will probably come from next year’s budget reserves, the rest will have to be coughed up by local governments. The gap between the needs and the available funds is so big, that not all flood victims will receive sufficient help, the daily predicts.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Marek Sawicki has signed a regulation which will trigger off funds for farmers who want to start or develop a business outside the farming sector.

“It is a move especially important for flood victims, because as of next Monday, it will be possible to change applications and ask for aid to start a business on farm premises. This week we expect also a permission from the European Commission to undertake new actions to aid people who plan to restart production after natural disasters,” Minister Sawicki told Polish Radio.
