Family in critical state after eating poisonous mushrooms

08.09.2010

Death cap (Amanita phalloides)

A father, daughter and her boyfriend are fighting for life after eating a poisonous mushroom commonly known as the death cap.

The news comes weeks after six year old Tomek ate poisoned mushrooms and had to have a liver transplant.

A 48-year-old man from the northern city of Bydgoszcz by mistake picked poisonous death caps and served them with other mushrooms to his 19-year-old daughter and her 20-year-old boyfriend.

After several hours, all were taken to hospital with severe stomachache and diarrhea.

The girl’s life is in danger and only a liver transplant can save her life.

The boyfriend, Wiktor, had a liver transplant last night in a hospital in the north-western city of Szczecin and remains in a critical condition.

Around 50 people a year die from eating poisonous mushrooms in Poland. (mg)
