A poll for Polskie Radio finds Civic Platform have a 12 percent lead over the opposition Law and Justice, while a survey for TVP television records a 27 percentage point advantage for PM Tusk’s party.
The opinion poll by Homo Homini, commissioned by Polish Radio, shows little change in the fortunes of the parties compared to one week ago. If a general election was held this weekend, the current senior partner in the ruling coalition, Civic Platform would receive 40.7 percent, Law and Justice 28.6 and the Democratic Left Alliance 12.6 percent.
The junior coalition partner, the Polish Peasant’s Party would receive 5 percent, right on the threshold to qualify for representation in parliament.
Turnout would be 51 percent, finds the poll by Homo Homini.
The research was conducted by telephone on September from a sample of 1,087 people, with a margin of error of three percent.
But a poll released earlier this weekend by OBOP for TVP public television found that 52 percent of respondents said they would vote for Civic Platform and 25 percent for Law and Justice.
The big surprise however is that 20 percent told the pollster they would vote for the Democratic Left Alliance, the left wing opposition party’s best showing in an opinion poll this parliamentary term.
The opinion polls were taken during a period of relative turmoil on the political scene in Poland, with splits opening up in both Civic Platform and Law and Justice over policy and strategy.
Local elections in Poland are scheduled for this autumn and a general election for next year, probably in the first half of 2011. (pg)
