Poland has overtaken Italy and Brazil in the number of applications for church annulments of marriage and now leads the world ranking.
New statistics published by the Vatican inform that in 2008 alone, 10,000 requests for annulment were filed in Poland. 3,500 were accepted, according to a report in the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.
The number annulments has tripled in nine years.
In general, divorce is on the increase in Poland. In 2009, secular courts in granted 72,000 divorces - that’s up from 66,000 in 2008.
There are no divorces in the Roman Catholic church - annulment of marriage is tantamount to a declaration that there had been no marriage at all.
Church authorities, as quoted by the daily, say that the number of requests for annulment of marriage prove that to many Poles religion is still important, however. (ek)
