Solidarity trade unionists are staging a protest outside the Presidential Palace in Warsaw in calling a monument commemorating the 96 who died in the Smolensk air disaster.

Protesters want a monument of the late president Lech Kaczynski, who died in the tragedy,  situated outside the palace where the controversial Smolensk cross is currently situated. The trade unionists are accompanied by farmers from the southern region of Rzeszow who are coming to Warsaw today to protest against the government agricultural policy at the Parliament and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

“They will arrive at the Presidential Palace about 13.00 CET, lay flowers at the Smolensk cross and pray with us,” says Dariusz Wernicki from the Committee of the Cross Defenders told Polish Radio this morning.

Farmers will release doves in a symbolic gesture commemorating the crash victims.

The cross defenders assure that the protest will be peaceful. “We just want to show how popular the idea is of building a monument of Lech Kaczynski and the Smolensk victims in front of the Presidential Palace is,” says Wlodzimierz Kaczanow from the Cross Defenders. (mg)
