PM to announce date of local elections

15.09.2010

Prime Minister Donald Tusk is to announce the date of the local elections, Wednesday, with politicians hinting at a possible ballot on November 21.

Election law does not oblige the head of government to announce local elections until October 13, with Donald Tusk announcing that he will consult the election date with President Bronislaw Komorowski and Parliamentary Speaker Grzegorz Schetyna.

It is reported that many politicians from across the poltical spectrum believe that November 21 would be the best day for local government elections.

The electoral calendar stipulates that the local ballot be held between November 14 and January 9, with elections being announced no later than 30 days before the end of local government terms.

Local governments and mayoral terms come to an end on November 12, with elections having to take place up to 60 days afterwards on a non-work day. (jb)
