New state-of-art Polish Army Museum planned

17.09.2010

A new Polish Army Museum, one of the biggest and most modern in Poland, will be built in a 19 century fortress in Warsaw.

The construction of the museum will start next year to be completed in 2013 and be open for visitors in 2015. It will cost about 420 million zloty (107 million euro) and be financed by the state budget.

Contrary to the old Polish Army Museum, the new museum will be hands on and visitors will be allowed to touch arms or get into  helicopter cockpits.

For the time being the area devoted to the future museum, the Warsaw Citadel built by Tsar Nicolas I after the 1830 November Rising, is being investigated by archaeologists. They already discovered 1,000 new archaeological items from 18th century to the middle war period, including a French Berthier Mle 170 rifle, a grenade and Russian and Prussian coins.

The new Polish Army Museum was designed by architects from the WXCA bureau. (mg)
