IVF on the state in Poland?

20.09.2010

Stefan Niesiolowski, Deputy Parliamentary Speaker from the ruling Civic Platform, has said that his party will tackle the in vitro fertilisation issue “this autumn,” adding that the reproductive method should be subsidised by the State.

Talking to Polish Radio Monday morning, Stefan Niesiolowski did not state the circumstances under which the fertility treatment would be funded, hinting only that the poorest families would be eligible to receive state-funded IVF.

“There is no one conclusion within Civic Platform on the matter,” the deputy speaker told Polish Radio, adding that the stalemate “is making progress difficult. A compromise needs to be found.”

Budget anxieties

Stefan Niesiolowski underlined that the struggle with keeping the budget deficit balanced will be felt by society, with measures having to be taken in order so that public finances do not collapse.

The deputy speaker admitted that the State Treasury is bogged down by social benefit costs, some of which are forced through by trade unions.

Talking to Polish Radio, Niesiolowski added that he hopes the Sejm lower parliamentary house will deliberate proposed government measures to revive public finances, although he did not discount public spending cuts. (jb)
