Freddie Mercury square?

21.09.2010

Locals want the late Jimi Hendrix and Freddie Mercury to have squares or roundabouts named after them in the Silesian town of Dąbrowa Górnicza, southern Poland.

A petition has been launched by a group of young residents of the town, who point out that only one of the local roundabouts  has a name, in honour of Poles banished to Siberia.

Twenty years ago exactly today one of the squares in Dąbrowa Górnicza became associated with Jimi Hendrix when locals repainted a communist-era monument and rechristened it in honour of the legendary rock guitarist and refused to let it be demolished.

Supporters of the idea to have the square officially called after Jimi Hendrix are also enthusiastic about dedicating another nameless roundabout  in Dąbrowa Górnicza to Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury. (ek)
