Michal Karaszewicz-Tokarzewski
Monday marks the 71st anniversary of the creation of the Polish Underground State.
Poland was the only occupied country in Europe that managed to create an entire state which enveloped both military and civilian aspects of life.
On 27 September 1939, the Service for Poland’s Victory (SZP) was created and taken under the command of Michal Karaszewicz-Tokarzewski. The organisation’s founding led to the creation of the underground state.
At a ceremonial mass in Warsaw, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, Senior Primate of Poland said that the people involved in the creation of the underground structures of the state “acted like [the Biblical character of] Job; even though they were not devoid of human hesitation, they persisted with [the struggle] for good.”
A public day for the commemoration of the creation of the SZP was passed by the parliament in 1998. (jb)
