Kaczynski marginalising moderates, says left wing leader

28.09.2010
Leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) Grzegorz Napieralski told Polish Radio this morning that Jaroslaw Kaczynski has chosen a non-party member to fight the Warsaw presidential elections to stave of an increase of influence of more moderate members of his Law and Justice party.

Napieralski said that choosing the non-aligned architect Czeslaw Bielecki for the election on November 21 in an attempt to sideline moderates in the Law and Justice party such as Pawel Poncyliusz, one of the so-called “doves” in the party which have pleaded with Kaczynski to use a more consensus approach to politics in fear of scaring off voters.

On the other hand, the SLD leader said that PM Donald Tusk often used criticisms of Kaczynski to deflect attention from his own lack of policy on fighting the finance deficit, for instance.

“It‘s mush easier to win an election that way.” he told Polish Radio.

Napieralski endorsed his own candidate for Warsaw president Wojciech Olejniczak, his predecessor as leader of the left wing party.

Napieralski also confirmed that his party would be introducing a bill in parliament to liberalise Poland’s strict abortion laws. The bill would effectively allow abortion on demand and up to 10 weeks in the pregnancy. (pg)
