Professor faces ban for plagiarising student’s thesis

29.09.2010
A university lecturer in Poland faces a three year ban for publishing parts of her student’s thesis in her new research.

Prof. Grazyna Bartkowiak of the Poznan University of Economics might be banned from teaching for three years after she included parts of her student’s Masters thesis in her book.

“It’s clear plagiarism,” Marek Wronski, plagiarism - buster at Poland’s higher education establishments told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

When Professor Grazyna Bartkowiak was a lecturer at the Medical University in Poznan, she supervised a Masters thesis of a nurse with 21-year professional experience. The thesis turned out to be so good that the academic promised to help the student publish it.

In fact, it is alleged, the lecturer found the thesis so enthralling that she used one third of it word-for-word in her own research.

The Publishing House Wolters Kluwer Business removed Prof. Bartkowiak’s book from bookshops and the Disciplinary Commission at the Poznan University of Economics will decide next week whether to deprive her of the right to work as a university lecturer for three years, as requested by the university’s Disciplinary Proceedings Representative.
