Transplant boy needs second liver

30.09.2010
Six year-old Tomek, who was poisoned with mushrooms in the summer, needs a second liver transplant, says a spokesman at the children’s centre in Warsaw.

“The boy is stable but persistent complications mean he cannot leave hospital. Tomek‘s eyes and skin are yellow and complications from surgery have not been eliminated,” said Pawel Trzcinski.

Tomek was rushed to hospital on 7 August and received a liver transplant. Now he needs another.

"We must wait patiently until we find another donor, " said the spokesman.

Tomek‘s plight highlighted the shortage of organ donors in Poland. Around 10 percent of transplanted organs fail, say doctors. (pg)
