A pop music concert has been held in the Market Square in Krakow to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Independent Student Union. The concert brought together top stars of several generations including Elektryczne Gitary, Mietek Szczesniak, Pawel Kukiz and Krystyna Pronko.
The Independent Student Union was the first student organization of an anti-communist character in Eastern Europe. Dubbed ‘Student Solidarity’, it fought for the democratization of academic life, observance of human rights and Poland’s freedom and independence.
The Independent Student Union was de-legalized after the imposition of martial law in December 1981. It resumed its activities in 1989, after the collapse of communism.
