Opposition loses ground to government

06.10.2010
A new opinion poll finds that support for the opposition Law and Justice party headed by Jaroslaw Kaczynski is falling further behind the ruling Civic Platform, with just a month and a half to go to nationwide local elections.

At the time of the presidential elections in July the PBS/DGA opinion pollster found that Law and Justice had 31 percent support in the country. But if elections were held this week Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s party would pick up just 23 percent support, a fall of four percent in the last two weeks.

Civic Platform’s support remains stable, with 44 percent saying they would vote for the senior coalition partner - down one percent from two weeks ago.

The Democratic Left Alliance is on 10 percent and the junior coalition partner, the Polish Peasant’s Party is on five percent, a rise of three percent support and enough to qualify for seats in the lower house of parliament.

The poll by PBS/DGA was commissioned by the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. (pg)
