Former communist becomes presidential advisor

07.10.2010
Tomasz Nałęcz has officially started his post as advisor to President Bronislaw Komorowski on history and heritage.

"I'm in the unique and comfortable situation advising the president on matters which Bronislaw Komorowski is well informed already, as he is a historian," Nałęcz, who was a member of the PZPR communist party from 1970 to 1990, told Polish Radio.

Nałęcz said part of his role is helping President Komorowski writing speeches on historical subjects.

Thomas Nałęcz is a former member of parliament (1993-1997 and 2001-2005). In December 2009 he declared that he would stand as a presidential candidate but withdrew following April’s Smolensk disaster.

Before the second round of presidential elections in July he officially endorsed the candidacy of Bronislaw Komorowski, a former Solidarity activist.

Komorowski has said that he wants to have a team of advisors from a wide range of political traditions and experience. (pg)
