Civic Platform holds strong lead in polls

15.10.2010

Ruling party Civic Platform would win 46 percent of the ballot if elections were to be held at the beginning of October, with Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s opposition Law and Justice managing to receive 26 percent of the vote.

A new poll released by TNS OBOP reveals that the Democratic Left Alliance would gain 13 percent in the ballot, while junior coalition partner the Polish Peasants Party would fail to get into Parliament with only 4 percent support.

Breakaway MP Janusz Palikot’s political movement was not included in the poll, although the survey found that 21 percent of respondents did not know which political party to support.

In comparison to TNS OBOP’s last election poll from mid-September, Civic Platform has increased its lead over Law and Justice from 13 to 20 percentage points. The Democratic Left Alliance has also gained one percentage point from last month.

However, a poll released last week by PBS/DGA and commissioned by Gazeta Wyborcza showed Civic Platform on 44 percent support with Law and Justice trailing on 23 percent.

Other parties received minimal support in the poll, with 2 percent going to the National Retired People’s Party and the right-wing League of Polish Families, which was a coalition partner in Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s government.

38 percent of respondents declared that they would vote if a ballot were held. TNS OBOP compiled the survey during the 7-10 October among a representative group of 967 adult Poles. (jb)
