Life sentence for alleged presidential death threat?

26.10.2010

Prosecutors in the north-eastern town of Olecko are looking into a supposed death threat against the President made by a man from the vicinity of Banie Mazurskie in Poland’s lake district.

Police in nearby Wegorzewo were alerted to the alleged threat after a meter reader working for the local electricity company overheard a statement made by the homeowner about a proposed attempt on the President’s life.

The reason for the death threat on President Komorowski is due to the deaths of Polish soldiers serving in Afghanistan, the latest fatality occurring earlier this month.

Prosecutors have discerned that the man’s son is also serving as a soldier in the Polish contingent there.

There are currently around 2,500 Polish soldiers serving in the country, with 22 fatalities since Poland entered Afghanistan.

If prosecutors find a case against the man and recognise the potential death threat on a head of state as being valid, the man may face a life sentence. (jb)
