A proposed amendment to the Highway Code in Poland may mean that the speed limit on the country’s motorways and expressways may increase by 10 km/h.
Parliamentarians working in the Committee for Administration and Internal Affairs believe that the technical conditions of Poland’s high-speed routes allow for the speed limit to be increased on them, and will not have a bearing on road safety.
The move will mean that the motorway speed limits will increase from 130 to 140 km/h (87 mph), with limits on expressways to increase from 110 to 120 km/h (75 mph).
Furthermore, the parliamentary committee also wants police forces to be more lenient on speeding offences, with permissable driver error to amount to 10 km/h, and not 5 km/h as previously billed by the Sejm lower parliamentary house.
If the resulting bill is passed, then the speed limits may become law from 1 January 2011. (jb)
