A 31 year-old man was detained early this morning by police after plaques were damaged on a commemorative tree at the site of the infamous Pawiak prison used by the Nazis during WW II occupied Warsaw.

Staff at the museum in memory of the estimated 300,000 who passed through the Gestapo prison are examining the extent of the damage to the elm tree.

The arrested man was approached at the scene by a night patrol at around 02.30 CET early this morning. The 31 year old fled but was eventually captured.

He is now helping police with their enquiries. Police doctors say the man was sober.

The infamous Pawiak prison was destroyed by the Nazis in August 1944 as they prepared to withdraw from the capital. (pg)
