Warm weather interrupts bears’ winter snooze

15.11.2010

The weather in Poland continues to be exceptionally warm for this time of the year and is playing havoc with wildlife’s preparations for the winter.

Only northern, north-western and western regions are cloudy with sunny breaks and have to be prepared for light rainfalls Monday afternoon. Maximum temperatures from 9 Celsius along the Baltic sea coast up north to 14 Celsius in central Poland and really warm 18 degrees in the south-east of the country.

Brown bears seem to be confused by the mini heat wave and rather than going to sleep, continue foraging. Forest rangers are coming across busy bears in raspberry bushes and close to deer feeders. The biggest number of Poland’s brown bears, over 100, live in the Bieszczady Mountains.

The warm spell is expected to last until Friday, weather forecasters say. (kk)
