Pawel Poncyljusz, one of the prominent members of Law and Justice’s moderate ‘dove’ faction has quit the party, stating that formally he will leave before the first round of local government elections billed for this upcoming weekend.

The move to leave Law and Justice comes after the decision by the party’s political committee to exclude Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska and Elzbieta Jakubiak from its structures. Poncyljusz had previously stated that if Law and Justice did not repeal their decision, he too would quit.

Meanwhile, head of the opposition Law and Justice, Jaroslaw Kaczynski told journalists that his party has had no time to deliberate Poncyljusz’s exclusion due to the ongoing election campaign for local governments.

“32,000 candidates, that is the greatest number from any party, today I am hard at work in order to achieve success and gain [seats] in local governments. Really, we will not be raising the issue of Pawel Poncyljusz today,” Kaczynski said.

Asked on whether the Law and Justice political committee would assemble to deliberate Poncyljusz’s future in the party, Kaczynski said “we are all on the front line for this election campaign. We don’t have the possibility to meet, and we have no intention of attending to matters of peripheral importance.” (jb)
